What would you do?
March 6th, 2007If you could do anything today, what would it be? Would you do something nice for yourself or would you want to do something for someone else? Would you seek to heal a personal issue or redeem a social cause? Would you tackle an assignment that is seemingly small or would you take on a seemingly insurmountable opportunity? Maybe writing it down will be your spark to getting it done. Maybe someone else will notice and help, or offer suggestions. There are no right or wrong answers.
If you could do anything today, what would you do? Then go do it!

We would keep Mason Elementary in Detroit open where we have a program supported by Hand in Hand Foundation and Beach Communications to work with 95 children. These children read at a level of at least two years below where they should be and within two years, using the program we have and the teachers we employ, we get them to grade level. The program is called Read A Book; See the World. We could take the program to all the Detroit schools so that all of the students could learn to read.
Call Oprah.
Oprah, for all her money, is not the answer. We need to have more children enrolled in this particular school in order to keep it open. This is the second school Rex and Hand in Hand has put a lot of resources and heart into that will be closed.
We need to find a way to make sure all kids get a quality eduction, regardless of where they live. It’s not fair that some kids in this country having a reading level two grades, or more, below what they’re enrolled in.
Another world is possible.
Peace, Love & Good Happiness Stuff,
Yale
Oprah, with all her money, doens’t have the political clout to effect the closing of Detroit schools. (Besides, do you think we’d be the only ones asking her for money for our pet project?) We need to work on a long-term solution to keep the quality of our shools up.
The frustrating part is that Mason will be the second school Rex and Hand in Hand has poured their heart and resources into that will be closed.
Something’s just not right when some schools can’t figure out how to spend all the money in their budget, while others have kids who can’t read at the grade level they’re enrolled in, and don’t have the money to keep some schools open.
Another world is possible.
Peace, love & good happiness stuff,
Yale
If I could do anything today, I would do three things:
I would go to a movie and dinner with my family.
I would create an environment where our kids are encouraged to do great things without being over-programmed; where they can live in a nurturing environment yet not be provided an artificial soft-landing at every bump in the road.
It has been forty years since the riots in Detroit… and yet, so little progress has been made in the relations between the City and the rest of our community. I would find a way to bridge this divide.
Tom, great ideas! Makes me feel that we must be “brothers from different mothers” Your comments have made me stop and think about things this morning.

I live in Detroit. I wish I could find a way to help my son’s friend on the next block. He has been mugged twice this year coming home from school. How do we make Detroit safe for a ninth grader who just wants to get to school and back everyday?
Maybe you can coordinate a school walk chaperone program in your neighborhood. Those who are available to walk the kids to and from school each week could be assigned certain days to escort the kids safely. The solution is in your community, do what you need to do to make changes in it.
Ask your sons friend who did it then call the police and turn them in, and STICK to your story. Step up. Stand up for yourself and for your community. I am just guessing, but he may know the mugger
If it was in my power, I would put a spell on the media to report the good news in Michigan. Our OWN media is the cause for a lot of the “doom and gloom” that people are feeling about our beautiful state. There is so much good news going on at our universities, at our companies, even in the automotive industry — but for some reason the media doesn’t lean to writing about good, happy stories (of which there are so many!). Yes, Michigan is in a financial crunch right now, but if we all become Ambassadors of our own little part of Michigan, we’ll see great things happening sooner rather than later…
How ironic that I should just come across your letter on “Good things versus bad” being in the news!! We were just discussing this last week with my children and wondered what would happen if we picked up a news paper and found only good news for once-Wouldn’t that be wonderful?? We only hear the bad and believe me there is really so much good–our family can prove it during the last few mounths when our daughter was diagonised with a brain tumor–the kindness from every one was overwhelming–even people we didn’t know were willing to help with food, driving and the children–these kind of things should be reconized, but I’m sure they would hold no interest except for our family
I am the daughter of Shirley Keesling diagnosed withthe brain tumor. I would like to fine a cure for GBM’s. This is the type of tumor I had. They removed 95% however there is still 5% left. I don’t like to think about that though. I have two small kids 7 and 5 and a WONDERFUL husband. I’m only 38 and I have alot of living in me yet!!!! The outpouring of love from my familey…I’m one of ten…friends, people from my son’s school, and even strangers is over whelming and frankly hard to take for a usually very independant woman. I Love God and everyone who says they pray for me. I have been feeling great through all of and I believe it is due to all the people that are sending prayers my way. THANK YOU ALL!!
Point me to the good fun stuff in Detroit and I’ll put it on the web
$25 plus food and transport

Let’s make an Internet TV station and children’s programming
Want positive news? Check out WWJ’s Michigan Future blog. Not all the news is positive. But the blog emphasizes good stuff:

The news is not all positive. But the emphasis is on good stuff. People are invited to respond to everything posted.
I agree, Irene. It would be great if they could at least counterpoint the bad with what each community is doing to help affected families or what they’re doing to prevent future crimes. Better yet, stop over-publicizing crime and misery to get ratings. What I do every day is turn off the local TV news and get my news from other sources.
It is my strong belief that the creative community will play an integral role in reviving the metropolitan Detroit area. An increase in cultural activity including visual and performing arts is necessary to attract and retain the interest of residents and visitors. Art has a positive impact on community, and can brighten the most blighted of environments and attitudes.
If I could do anything today, I would create an artist collective/community. I would obtain space to encourage and foster creativity for local artists unable to afford studio space on their own. As a non-profit endeavor, the community would support itself through grants, sales of art created on-premises, and fundraising events and activities. As part of this community, I would also implement outreach programs designed to encourage creativity among children who otherwise may not have creative programs available to them.
You should get in touch with Ulysses. He’s looking to some simular things.
Wow…If I could do anything today what would I do?
There are so many things that I could answer to that, but I think if I answer this honestly, the first thing I would like to do is get Myself and my daughters out of debt so that we would be better off financially to help out others.
I would also like to open a non-profit center where parents of Mentally and/or Physically challenged kids could take them while they go to work or out to dinner, a place where they would be safe, cared for and loved, where parents would feel comfortable leaving them.
I would like to slow everything down – just a little. I’m all for a fast-paced lifestyle, but life throws so much at us it is sometimes hard to decipher what it all means, and how we should respond to it – our families, careers, and aging parents to name a few. The list sometimes gets “out-of-hand.”
If there was some way to slow things down – just a little – it might help us all have a better appreciation for what we have, and how we might be able to impove the lives of others.
You know what? I’m beginning to think I could start slowing things down by going fishing.
Spring Walleye should be coming in soon!
I would go to Disney World and ride all of the rides that I was affraid to ride before (except the Tea Cups, because I will never go on the Tea Cups again!).
You should go! Disney is a wonderful place - just stay away from “Its a Small World,” otherwise, you may have nightmares.
If I could do anything today:
I would duplicate the innocence and wonder that fill the hearts of children and transfer those feelings into the hearts that have forgotten how to smile.
Amen
I would referee the perfect soccer game….on fields that would be safely maintained without ruts and rocks, with coaches that would be teachers of the game and not screamers and bullies and with parents who would only congratulate their sons or daughters on the effort they gave. There are so many fields that our kids play on that are terribly inadequate — large patches of dirt or bare fields, goals that are ancient, grass not cut, etc. I’d make sure that every soccer field, football field, ball diamond or any other athletic facility that our kids use would be truly fields of dreams.
I live In Detroit
I want to create Internet based nieghborhood media centers.
Where local kids could make TV and radio shows that featured them and their communities and lets people know of the things we can do.
I’d like to create
A biodiesel powered connector route shuttle bus transportation network. That employeed students to convert used fryer grease from local resturants.
A dance and music show that wasn’
